Despite three homeruns, the Philadelphia Athletics lost the opening game of their series with the Cleveland Indians, by a score of 9-7.
The game was tied 5-5, heading into the bottom of the seventh, when Cleveland exploded for four runs. Fred Caluguiri started for the Athletics, but was only able to go four and two thirds innings. Lou Boudreau led the way for the Indians, with a home run, two singles and a walk.
