Frank Caligiuri is drawing inspiration from the Negro League stars who have joined the Athletics and it shows in his pitching. Accepting a role as the fourth man in the rotation, Caligiuri has delivered in spades, with a 4-0 mark for first place Philadelphia. He pitched scoreless ball until the eighth, when the Browns finally broke through, scoring three runs. Smokey Joe Williams was able to come in and put out the fire.

The former doormats of the American League are off to a red hot start and it isn’t solely the Negro League players who are stepping up. Cool Papa Ball stroked his first homerun of the year, in this game.

Oddly, it was the third straight game with a 5-3 final score.
