What was supposed to be a double header, turned into a single game, in which Philadelphia squeaked by St. Louis, 2-1. Rain began to fall in the eighth inning of game one and the second contest was postponed.
A Joe Grace solo homer off A’s starter, Fred Caligiuri, gave the Browns an early, 1-0 lead. Philadelphia would tie it in the fourth. Buck Leonard doubled and was singled in by Josh Gibson.
In the bottom of the eighth, James Bell walked and stole second. He advanced to third on Ray Dandridge’s single, then scored what proved to be the winning run, on a sacrifice fly by Leonard. Buck finished with a double, two singles and the game winning sac fly.
The Athletics were extremely lucky to come away with a win. Caligiuri once again escaped with a no decision. He managed to go seven innings, but was hit hard, giving up four extra base hits. He was also aided by the fact that St. Louis left nine men on base, during his time on the mound.
The team has a scheduled day off on June 16. Standings will be posted then.
