HR-TED WILLIAMS; JOSH GIBSON 2(23)

The first game of the double header was a 6-5 nailbiter, which Philadelphia won on a Bob Johnson, walkoff rbi single. That win snapped a four game losing streak, the longest of the year for the Athletics. Fred Caligiuri started and went seven innings, but got a no decision for his trouble.

In game two, only a solo homer by Ted Williams, kept Satchel Paige from a shutout, but he limited Boston to just five hits, in the 10-1 rout. Josh Gibson and James Bell carried the offense. Gibby blasted a pair of homers, along with a double and two singles, for a perfect 5-5 day. He also drove in six runs. Bell was 4-4, with a walk. He scored four times and stole a base.

Unfortunately, New York beat Washington twice, to keep pace in the standings.
