Detroit ends up taking two out of three against the Athletics, who now have the New York Yankees hot on their trail.
Starter, Fred Caligiuri left after eight innings, clinging to a 3-2 lead. Philadelphia even got an insurance run in the top of the ninth, when Sam Chapman singled in pinch hitter Wally Moses, who has also reached base.
However, it was to no avail, as Porter Vaughan surrendered three runs in the bottom of the ninth.
