The Athletics ended a four game losing streak in dramatic fashion, when Sam Chapman stepped up in the top of the ninth and belted a Jack Kramer pitch over the wall, with the bases loaded. The big blow put Philadelphia up, 8-6, then Tom Ferrick set the Browns down in the last of the ninth, to clinch it.
Chapman’s clout came with two outs and all runs were unearned, as Bennie McCoy reached on a walk, then Eddie Collins Jr. made it to second on a two base error. A second base on balls filled the sacks, setting the stage for Chapman’s heroics.
Philadelphia got further good news when they found out the Yankees lost to the Indians, 2-1, thereby putting the Athletics back in sole possession of first place, by one game.
The club now has a tough stretch of four games in two days at Chicago.
