Philadelphia has won back to back games for the first time since July 30th, but it was a struggle to get there. Red Ruffing and Joe Rogan traded zeros for the first five innings, until Bob Johnson’s solo shot got the Athletics on the board, in the bottom of the sixth.
The Yankees rallied in the top of the seventh to take a big lead. Rogan gave up two singles, two walks, then a bases clearing triple by Joe DiMaggio; as New York took a 4-1 lead.
Philly would answer in a big way. Hal Wagner pinch hit for Rogan and singled. James Bell followed with a second single, while Wagner advanced to third. Buck Leonard reached on a fielder’s choice, plating a run. Ray Dandridge then singled and Josh Gibson blasted a three run home run, giving the lead back to the Athletics, 5-4.
Both teams made crucial errors in the ninth inning. Reliever, Tom Ferrick plunked pinch hitter, George Selkirk, to lead off the Yankee ninth. Joe Gordon then reached on Al Brancato’s bobble. Red Rolfe advanced the runners on a ground out, with Tommy Heinrich tying the game, 5-5, on a sacrifice fly.
The speedy Bell reached second on a two base error by Phil Rizzuto, in the bottom of the ninth. Buck Leonard then ended the game on a walk off home run, the third circuit clout of the day for Philadelphia.
With a 2-0 series lead, the Athletics now play a double header against the Yankees to finish things off.
