GM# 109 AUGUST 13, 1941 VS. BOSTON RED SOX
GIBSON GOES FROM HERO TO GOAT, AS PAIGE SUFFERS STUNNING 3-2 LOSS
BOS 3 10 1
PHI 2 6 2
WP-BILL FLEMING, SV-EARL JOHNSON LP-SATCHEL PAIGE(17-3)
HR-JOSH GIBSON(35); TED WILLIAMS, BOBBY DOERR
Josh Gibson hit a two run clout in the first inning and with Satchel Paige on the bump, it looked like Philadelphia was in good shape. However, baseball is a funny game and things can change quickly.
After logging the first two outs in the top of the eighth, Paige surrendered a solo homer to Red Sox great, Ted Williams. The worst was yet to come. Gibson muffed an easy chance in front of home plate, putting the tying run on base. Bobby Doerr then greeted Satchel with a two run smash, putting Boston in front, 3-2. Just like that, Paige went from a win and possible shutout, to trailing by a run. Bill Fleming, who had relieved starter, Charlie Wagner, tossed a scoreless seventh and eighth, while Earl Johnson retired the Athletics in order, to earn the save.
The two clubs now play a twinbill to close out the series.
