In the first of two games at Comiskey Park, Philadelphia defeated Chicago, 4-0, behind Satchel Paige’s seventh shutout of the year. Paige scattered five hits, fanned eight, walked one and hit one batter, in another stellar pitching performance. James Bell and Ray Dandridge led the offense with two hits apiece.

Starter, Joe Rogan, got the first two outs in the bottom of the eighth, but after loading the bases with a walk and two singles; Tom Ferrick took over to try and put out the fire. Unfortunately, for the Athletics, Chicago left fielder, Moose Solters poured gasoline on it, belting a grand slam, to put the White Sox on top, 6-5.
Philadelphia threatened in the top of the ninth, when with two outs, James Bell and Ray Dandridge both singled, however Biz Mackey lined out to short, to end the game.
Josh Gibson’s batting average is now .399, the first time it has dropped below .400 this season. The series wraps up tomorrow.
