Philadelphia trailed, 5-1, but in the bottom of the ninth, Yankee pitching loaded the bases on walks, then Ray Dandridge laced a three run triple into the corner, pulling the Athletics to within one run. However, Dandridge was thrown out trying to score on a short fly ball to Tommy Heinrich in center field. After the double play, Norm Branch struck out to end the game. Spud Chandler held the Athletics to just two hits, but one of those was McCoy’s homer and he also issued five walks, two of which scored.

New York starter, Marius Russo, was one out away from a 3-1 victory, when he buckled in the bottom of the ninth. First, he plunked Dick Siebert with a pitch. Pete Suder then tripled and Crash Davis singled in the tying run. Josh Gibson pinch hit but was retired. The game moved into extra innings. With one out in the bottom of the 12th, Eddie Collins Jr. singled, then Ray Dandridge doubled, sending him to third. The fleet Collins scored the winning run, on Sam Chapman’s ground ball.

As the entire American League is dark on September 2, standings will be posted then.
