GM#’S 142, 143. SEPTEMBER 14, 1941 VS. ST. LOUIS BROWNS
STL 2 9 1
PHI 3 5 2
WP-TOM FERRICK(8-7) LP-BILL TROTTER
HR-JOSH GIBSON(42)
The Athletics spotted Bill Foster a 2-0 lead, courtesy of Josh Gibson’s forty second home run of the season; Foster then pitched shutout ball until the Browns tied the game in the top of the ninth. An error by Alan Brancato meant both runs were unearned.
Remarkably, another miscue, this one a two base variety by Don Heffner, allowed James Bell to scoot home with the game winning run, in the 3-2 victory.
STL 11 18 0
PHI 4 9 1
WP- BILL TROTTER LP-FRED CALIGIURI(16-6)
HR-RICK FERRELL; SAM CHAPMAN(6)
Philadelphia had no chance in the second game. Starter, Fred Caligiuri was chased after just 2.2 innings, having allowed four runs, one unearned. Things got worse from there, as Bump Hadley gave up five more tallies in the top of the fifth inning. St. Louis’ bullpen let the Athletics into the game late, allowing four runs over the final three innings, but the damage was long done by then. The Browns won 11-4, with an eighteen hit attack.
