WP-SATCHEL PAIGE(1-0) LP-WHIT WYATT(0-1)
The Brooklyn Dodgers knew they’d have their hands full facing Satchel Paige, but they couldn’t have imagined just how tall a task it would be. Paige pitched a three hit, shutout, as Philadelphia took the opening game of the 1941 World Series.
Counting his last three starts in the regular season, Paige has not given up a run in 36 innings. He began the game by allowing a triple to Dixie Walker, who was promptly stranded at third. After that, Paige was practically unhittable. He surrendered a pinch hit single to Jimmy Wasdell, in the top of the sixth and a second single to Cookie Lavagetto, in the seventh. That was it. Paige punched out seven batters along the way, while issuing just one walk.
After Walker was caught off third on a lineout to Ray Dandridge, for a double play in the first; Philadelphia drew first blood in the bottom of the opening stanza. James Bell drew a walk off of Dodgers starter, Whit Wyatt. Dandridge grounded into a 5-4-3 twin killing, to quickly snuff out the rally. Buck Leonard got the home fans back in it, by lacing a triple into the corner. Josh Gibson followed that with a two bagger, scoring Leonard. Bob Johnson followed that with a second double, plating Gibson. Benny McCoy drew a base on balls and that brought action in the Brooklyn bullpen. Al Brancato then flew to Pete Reiser in center, ending the inning. Philadelphia 2. Brooklyn 0.
In the bottom of the fifth, James Bell got things started with a single, then advanced to third on a Dandridge single. That would end Whit Wyatt’s day. Lefty, Larry French, was brought in to face left hander, Buck Leonard. With the infield in, Leonard hit a ground ball to Pee Wee Reese. Bell broke for the plate and was thrown out by Reese. Leonard was safe at first, on the fielder’s choice, with Dandridge moving to second base. Right hander, Newt Kimball was brought in to pitch to Josh Gibson. The Athletics’ backstop slashed his second double of the game, scoring Dandridge. Leonard was forced to stop at third base. Bob Johnson lifted a deep fly to center field, for the second out, but Leonard came in on the sacrifice fly. McCoy reached on his second free pass of the day, but Brancato grounded out to end the inning. Philadelphia 4. Brooklyn 0.
James Bell was 2-3, with a walk. Josh Gibson was 3-4, with a pair of doubles.
