Brooklyn won their first game of the series, with a 4-1 victory over Fred Caligiuri and the Philadelphia Athletics. Fitzsimmons worked eight and a third innings, allowing just one run on four hits.

The game took a bad turn in the very first inning. James Bell was drilled in the ribs with Fitzsimmons’ first pitch of the game. He started to first but collapsed, and left the game, to be replaced by Eddie Collins. The next three batters were retired and action moved to the bottom of the first. With Bell on his mind, Caligiuri threw a beanball at Brooklyn leadoff hitter, Pee Wee Reese. The shortstop dropped like a stone and both benches, as well as the bullpen’s raced in. It took a while for order to be restored, however, the umpires finally gained control and with it being a World Series, ejected no players. Yet Bell and Reese both had to left the game and their return to the series is doubtful.

After two scoreless innings, Brooklyn got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third, when Billy Herman walked and was later knocked in by a Cookie Lavagetto single. Dixie Walker made it 2-0, when he hit the first home run of the series, in the bottom of the fourth. Leo Durocher, who came in for Reese, stroked a two run single in the seventh, increasing Brooklyn’s speed to 4-0. Fitzsimmons finally gave up a run, with one out in the top of the ninth. Luke Hamlin came on in relief and though he issued a walk and a single, was able to get Collins to ground into a game ending double play.
