Satchel Paige’s magic run suddenly came to an end, as Brooklyn rallied with their backs to the wall and came out with a 7-6 win, extending the World Series to six games. The Athletics gave Paige a 2-0 lead in the top of the first and he allowed no runs in the bottom of the first, however, in the last of the second, Brooklyn tagged him for five runs, though two of those were unearned.
Bob Johnson’s two run blast in the top of the third, got Philadelphia right back in it, 5-4. In the top of the fourth, Al Brancato tripled in Wally Moses, who had walked. One batter later, Sam Chapman singled in Brancato, putting the Athletics up, 6-5.
The game turned in the last of the fifth. Lew Riggs singled off Bump Hadley, who had relieved Paige. Pete Reiser laid down a sacrifice bunt. Dolph Camilli lined out to first base. Joe Medwick hit a game tying single into center field. Leo Durocher drew a walk, putting runners on first and second. Mickey Owen then hit an rbi single scoring Medwick and giving Brooklyn a lead they would not relinquish.
Philadelphia had the bases loaded with no outs in the top of the seventh, but with the infield in, Benny McCoy hit into a 5-2-3, double play. Davis retired Wally Moses and Brancato, ending the threat.
The Athletics return home to Philadelphia, still holding a 1-0 Series lead.
