The Philadelphia Athletics were one out away from a World Series title. They held an 8-5 lead in the top of the ninth; at home; when a collapse for the ages occurred. With two out and Mickey Owen on first, Dixie Walker singled off Lum Harris. The dangerous, Pete Reiser, then laced a triple into the left field corner, plating Owen and Walker, to make it, 8-7. Harris lost Ducky Medwick to a base on balls, then Dolph Camilli drilled the second three bagger of the inning, scoring two more runs and putting the Dodgers in front, 9-8.

Harris left to a chorus of boos, but the damage was done. Whit Wyatt pitched the bottom of the ninth. After getting Ray Dandridge to ground out, Leonard reached on a single, but then Sam Chapman grounded into a series ending, double play.

It was a stunning and heart breaking defeat for the Athletics, who had gotten seven strong inning out of Fred Caligiuri, but whose bullpen, the clubs’ weak point, was unable to come through in the clutch.

Much credit has to go to Brooklyn. They never quit after losing the first two games. They won game three, 4-1; then took the last three games, 7-6, 8-3 and 9-8; two of those games on the road.
