TOUR RECORD 2-2
PHENOMS 1
SUPERBAS 2 (11 INNINGS)
WP-NAP RUCKER LP-BRUCE SUTTER(0-1)
In the first extra inning game of the tour, the Phenoms dropped a 2-1 decision to the Brooklyn Superbas, in eleven innings.
The game featured a great pitching battle between Brooklyn’s Nap Rucker and the Phenoms’ Vean Gregg. Rucker went the full eleven frames, allowing just one run on five hits: while Gregg went nine and a third, leaving with the score tied 1-1.
Brooklyn struck first, when Hub Northen doubled in John Hummel, in the second inning. That lead held up until the top of the seventh, when Orlando Cepeda singled with one out. Carlton Fisk’s double sent Cepeda to third, where he late scored on Cal Ripken’s sacrifice fly.
Action moved into the bottom of the eleven. Bruce Sutter, who replaced Gregg, allowed back-to-back singles to Hummel and Bill Davidson, putting runners on the corners. Northen. who had already stroked a pair of doubles earlier in the game, won it, with a sacrifice fly.
