The Phenoms took a 6-2 lead into the bottom of the ninth against the 1911 Philadelphia Phillies. Starter, Shonei Ohtani, had lasted four innings and was replaced by Pete Alexander in relief. Alex was terrific, pitching four more innings of scoreless ball. Bruce Sutter was tagged to nail the game down in what was a low leverage situation, but things turned bad quickly. Sutter allowed three Philly runs in just two thirds of an inning, when Hans Lobert smashed a three-run home run. Mark Eichhorn came in and retired Sherry Magee for the final out.
On the good side, Mark Tulowitzki, Joe Jackson and Cal Ripken each had two hits. On the bad side, Eddie Murray took the Golden Sombrero, fanning four times. Willie Mays had his first game without a hit, striking out three times. Dustin Pedroia remains hitless through the first six games, though he did reach on two free passes today.
