PHENOMS LOSE ON RIPKEN ERROR IN BOTTOM OF 16TH INNING

PHENOMS 3

CUBS 4 16 INNINGS

WP-ED REULBACH LP-MARK EICHHORN(1-2)

HR-EDDIE MURRAY(2)

The Phenoms lost a marathon game, when Cal Ripken misplayed a ball at third base, in the bottom of the sixteenth inning, allowing Wildfire Shulte, to prance home with the winning run, as the 1911 Chicago Cubs notched a 4-3 victory.

The loss snaps a four-game winning streak for the Phenoms. Hideo Nomo started and struggled, allowing three runs in just three innings. Eddie Murray got the Phenoms on the board in the top of the third, when Troy Tulowitzki’s sacrifice fly plated Willie Mays, who had walked earlier in the inning.

Neither team could get anything going until Eddie Murray tied the game by smashing a two-run home run off Cubs starter, Three Finger Brown. Phenoms relief pitching was nothing short of spectacular from the fourth inning on. Joe Page tossed four innings of scoreless ball; Bruce Sutter, three innings, including five strikeouts; Mark Fidrych another scoreless four innings, until Mark Eichhorn took over in the bottom of the fifteenth inning.

Eichhorn retired the side in order in the fifteenth inning. He fanned Jimmy Sheckard to begin the sixteenth, but Wildfire Shulte singled and promptly stole second base. Solly Hofman hit a short pop fly over the head of Cal Ripken at third base. Ripken retrieved the ball and threw wildly towards home plate, as Shulte raced around to score the winning run.

The Phenoms bench will likely empty for the next game as the starters are exhausted after this extra inning affair.

NEXT GAME: AT 1911 CINCINNATI REDS, PALACE OF THE FANS, CINCINNATI, OH.
