SUTTER FALTERS IN 9TH AS PHENOMS FALL TO 1911 CARDINALS, 6-5
WP-ROY GOLDEN LP-BRUCE SUTTER (0-2)
HR-JOE JACKSON (2), FRANK ROBINSON (2)
Bruce Sutter came in to try and close out the bottom of the ninth inning, as the Phenoms held a slim, 5-4 lead over the 1911 Cardinals, but things went horribly wrong, as Sutter walked Miller Huggins to start the inning. He then surrendered a single to Arnold Hauser. Rube Ellis then won it for St. Louis by lashing a triple into the right field corner.
A fine offensive effort was wasted by the Phenoms, as they outhit St. Louis, 14-9. The Cardinals also committed three errors to none for the rookie barnstormers. In the end, though, the final score is all that matters.
Joe Jackson had a huge day at the top of the lineup. He was 4-4, with a home run and three doubles. He also drew a walk in his last at bat. Shonei Ohtani, the fine, two-way player, got a chance to bat in the designated hitter spot and didn’t disappoint. He was a perfect 5-5, with a double.
The team wraps up the 1911 leg of the tour with a 10-6 record. There were five extra-inning games played. Nine of the sixteen games were one run affairs.
