RED SOX 3
WP-HERB PENNOCK LP-HIDEO NOMO(0-1)
The 1920 Boston Red Sox defeated the Phenoms, 3-1, despite being outhit, 8 to 4. That is largely because starting pitcher, Hideo Nomo issued seven free passes and also threw two wild pitches, in just five and a third innings.
Nomo’s worst inning came in the bottom of the sixth, when he gave up a single to Mike McNally, who promptly stole second base. Nomo then threw back-to-back wild pitches, allowing McNally to score and at that time, putting Boston up, 2-1. Nomo fanned Mike Menosky for the first out, but then issued three straight walks, loading the bases. Miraculously, the Phenoms were able to get out of the jam, when Eddie Foster popped out and Everett Scott grounded out, third to first.
Boston starter, Herb Pennock grinded out a complete game win, scattering one run on eight hits. For the Phenoms, Eddie Murphy led the offense with a three-hit day, while Joe Jackson and Frank Robinson had two hits apiece.
