Phenoms’ starter, Kerry Wood, escaped with a no decision, after having his worst start of the tour. Wood was sent packing by the 1920 Reds, after just an inning and two thirds. He gave up five runs on four hits, one being a three-run home run. He also walked three batters, hit another and had a wild pitch. The score was 5-1 Reds, at the end of two innings.
Pete Alexander came on in relief and was lights out, tossing 4.1 innings of scoreless ball, to keep his club within striking distance. Mark Fidrych took over for Alexander and surrendered the sixth run for Cincinnati. The Reds starter, Dutch Reuther was extremely solid until the top of the eighth. Dustin Pedroia struck out to begin the inning, but Willie Mays and Troy Tulowitzki singled, then Frank Robinson cleared the bases with his sixth home run, to make it 6-4, Reds. Dolph Luque took over for Reuther after Robinson’s blast. He fanned Eddie Murphy, but Orlando Cepeda took Luque deep, bringing the Phenoms to within one run. Luque then struck out Cal Ripken to end the eighth inning, then set the Phenoms down in order in the top of the ninth.
Willie Mays broke out of his slump in a big way, going 4-4, with a triple, double and two singles.
