You don’t rack up a 9 and 0 pitching mark, without some luck and Kerry Wood had plenty of it against the 1934 Giants. Wood went six innings and was in trouble in each one. New York left eight runners on base, four of them in scoring position, during Wood’s stint on the mound.
Fortunately for him, his teammates went after screw ball specialist, Carl Hubbell, in a big way. The Phenoms tagged the lefty for three home runs and two triples, in Hubbell’s six innings of work.
Mark Fidrych was brilliant in three innings of scoreless relief. He allowed just one hit, during that time.
Orlando Cepeda slashed a triple in the top of the sixth, keeping a fifteen-game hit streak alive. Joe Jackson also had a three bagger, which coincidentally, kept a nine-game hitting streak going for him.
