Well, it was a jam-packed day of action in this one. Three key things happened in the Phenoms’ 8-0 win over the 1934 Chicago Cubs.

First off, Hideo Nomo tossed his second shutout of the tour, holding the Cubs to just three hits, while fanning eight. Secondly, Willie Mays joins Cal Ripken as the only Phenoms players to have a multiple home run game. Mays hit two today, for a total of three. Lastly, though the Cubs lost, they stopped Orlando Cepeda’s hitting streak, which ended at 22 straight games. Cepeda grounded out to short stop, three times, lined to first base and flew out to center, so, 0-5. The interesting thing is the Phenoms decided to try him from the leadoff spot for the first time and it was a failed experiment. Orlando was 35 for 99 during the streak, hitting at a .364 clip. He had 8 doubles, 1 triple and 4 home runs, in a 22 game stretch. He has raised his overall average to .317.

There are two other small hit streaks in the works. Frank Robinson has hit in 10 straight and Joe Jackson five straight. I won’t comment further on these unless either player gets to 15 consecutive games. Robinson, of course, remains red hot, with his sixth homer on this leg of the tour.

NEXT GAME: AT 1934 CINCINNATI REDS
