The Phenoms trotted out their stopper, Kerry Wood and he did just that, ending a four-game losing streak by defeating the 1941 New York Yankees, 4-2.
The rookie squad opened the scoring with three runs in the top of the third. Joe Jackson reached on an error, then Willie Mays stroked a rbi triple. Orlando Cepeda grounded to first, with Mays having to hold, but it didn’t matter, for the next batter, Eddie Murray, clubbed a two-run home run.
A two-base error by Jackson in right field, led to two runs for the Yankees against Wood, both, obviously unearned. Bruce Sutter would take over for the final two innings. In winning his eleventh decision without a loss, Wood went seven innings, allowed two runs on three hits. He struck out nine and walked just one batter.
