The Giants’ Babe Young hit three solo homers off Phenoms starter, Jose Fernandez, but the rookies had two of their own and went on to a 7-4 win over the 1941 New York Giants, in the home run friendly confines of the Polo Grounds.
New York’s slugging first baseman took advantage of the short porch down the right field line in three consecutive at bats against Fernandez, but fortunately for the Phenoms, there were none on base when he connected. Willie Mays, who had three hits on the day, knocked in what would prove to be the winning run, in the top of the eighth, when he singled in Cal Ripken, who had walked earlier in the inning.
