Boston’s Vern Stephens got the scoring started, when he homered off Hideo Nomo, in the bottom of the second. The Red Sox would add another run in the last of the sixth. Nomo walked both Johnny Pesky and Ted Williams, then threw a wild pitch while Stephens was at the plate. Nomo got Stephens to line out, but Bobby Doerr hit a sacrifice fly, giving Boston a 2-0 lead. The Phenoms finally got to starter, Mel Parnell, in the top of the eighth. Joe Jackson singled. Andre Dawson grounded to first, but Frank Robinson tripled. A sac fly by Murray scored Robby, tying the game at 2 all. Cal Ripken’s solo blast off Jack Kramer put the Phenoms ahead to stay, in the first game of the 1949 block. Nomo came away with a no decision. He allowed two runs, on two hits, struck out seven, but walked four and threw two wild pitches. Eichhorn pitched three innings of scoreless relief, allowing just one hit, while striking out two batters.
