Roy Campanella clubbed a one out home run in the bottom of the ninth, breaking a 2-2 tie, as the 1949 Brooklyn Dodgers beat the Phenoms, 3-2.

The Phenoms drew first blood, when Willie Mays scored on a ground ball off the bat of Orlando Cepeda, in the top of the first inning. They went up, 2-0, on Cal Ripken’s fourteenth homer of the year, in the fourth inning. Kerry Wood sailed through the first seven innings but faltered in the eighth. He started the inning by walking leadoff hitter, Pee Wee Reese. He got Gene Hermanski to line out to first, but then Duke Snider smacked a two-run clout, to tie the game. Preacher Roe stayed in for Brooklyn, retiring the last eight men he faced. With one out in the last of the ninth, Roy Campanella deposited a Bruce Sutter offering into the seats, to win it for the Dodgers.
