PHENOMS TURN TRIPLE PLAY IN 6-2 WIN OVER ’49 GIANTS
PHENOMS 6
GIANTS 2
WP- PETE ALEXANDER (9-2) LP-DAVE KOSLO
HR-CAL RIPKEN (15); WES WESTRUM
Phenoms fans got to experience a rare baseball play, when the team turned a triple play, in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Phenoms had a 5-0 lead, heading into the last of the fifth, when Wes Westrum scored the first run for the Giants, with a solo home run. Hank Thomson and Whitey Lockman followed that with back-to-back singles. With runners on first and second, Joe Gordon hit a hard one hopper to Cal Ripken at third base. Ripken stepped on third, then threw to second to force Lockman. Dustin Pedroia’s throw to first just beat Gordon to the bag, completing the triple play.
Ripken homered and singled, while Carlton Fisk had a double and a triple, to lead the offense. Pete Alexander was only able to go five innings, but with the big early cushion, it was enough for him to earn the win.
