Kerry Wood tossed seven strong innings, holding the 1949 Washington Senators to just three hits, in a 7-2 victory. On the minus side, one of the hits was a two-run home run by Bud Stewart. In addition, Wood struck out six and walked two.

The lineup was loaded with second string players, and they came through in a big way, in support of their starting pitcher. Jim Lefebvre took over for Dustin Pedroia at the keystone sack and had the biggest day, going 4-5, with three doubles. Chris Chambliss, who played first base, had a pair of singles and a sacrifice fly. Bob Meusel was at the hot corner. He had a double and a single. Luis Aparicio was 1-4 at the plate and played shortstop. Andre Dawson moved to right, giving Joe Jackson the day off, while Willie Mays patrolled center field.
