Carlton Fisk’s home run in the top of the tenth, put the Phenoms ahead to stay, in a wild, 6-5 win over the ’49 Browns, in ten innings.
Pete Alexander and Ned Garver were the starters, with Alexander going eight innings and Garver, seven. The game was tied at one apiece, heading into the top of the eighth. Murray led off with a solo homer. After Cal Ripken singled, Tom Ferrick took over for Garver on the mound. Carlton Fisk followed with another single, then Orlando Cepeda smashed a three-run clout, putting the Phenoms in front, 5-1.
That lead would not hold up, however, for in the bottom of the ninth, Roy Sievers greeted Alexander with a double, then Whitey Platt hit a single that moved Sievers to third base. Bruce Sutter replaced Alexander. He struck out Dick Kokos for the first out of the inning, but then allowed a double, which scored a run; a single, which scored another and a walk, to load the bases. With two runs in and the sacks jammed, Spence hit a single to plate another run and Jerry Priddy hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 5 all. Jack Graham lined out to end the ninth.
In the top of the ninth, Carlton Fisk belted a one out, solo home run, to put the Phenoms up, 6-5. Mark Eichhorn came on to pitch the bottom of the tenth and retired the Browns in order. Though Sutter was the pitcher of record at the time of Fisk’s go ahead run, Eichhorn was granted the win, based on being judged as the most effective reliever.
