Looking for a spark, the Phenoms pulled several substitute players off the bench to face the 1951 Washington Senators, in hopes of winning the game and ending a three-game losing streak.
It worked, as Shonei Ohtani toed the rubber for his first start since early in the tour and he came away with a 5-3 victory. Joe Jackson, who had three hits and scored three times and Frank Robinson, who was the designated hitter, were two of the regulars who played. Eddie Murray took Robinson’s place in left field, for this game.
Johnny Bench had three hits, including a double, while spelling Carlton Fisk. Chris Chambliss had a double and a sacrifice fly, while replacing Orlando Cepeda at first. Bob Meusel took over for Cal Ripken at third, but was quiet at the plate, going 0 for 5. Jim Lefebvre took over the keystone sack for Dustin Pedroia. Jim had a pair of singles. Willie Mays patrolled center field and had a rbi single. Finally, Luis Aparicio held down shortstop for Troy Tulowitzki. Little Louie had a single and a walk.
Ed Yost’s three run homer in the second inning were the only runs put up by the Senators.
