Vic Wertz belted a pair of home runs and also had two doubles, as the 1951 Detroit Tigers defeated the Phenoms, 2-1. Wertz’s first blast was a two-run clout off starter, Hideo Nomo, in the bottom of the fourth. That gave Detroit the lead over the Phenoms, who had scored the game’s first run in the third inning, on two Tiger errors. Wertz’s second homer came in the last of the eighth, off reliever, Mark Eichhorn.
Wertz’s first home run was very costly for Nomo, who was tagged with the loss, despite striking out a dozen batters in seven innings. Hideo has now dropped his last three decisions. Fred Hutchinson got the complete game win, allowing just the unearned run, on five hits, while fanning three. He did not walk a batter.
Also in this game, a fifteen-game hit streak ended for Orlando Cepeda, who was 0-4.
