Brooklyn’s Gil Hodges hit a three-run clout in the bottom of the eighth inning, snapping a 1-1 tie and sending the ’56 Dodgers to a 6-3 win over the Phenoms. The visitors got two solo shots, from Joe Jackson and Orlando Cepeda, but Hodges’ bomb rendered them useless.
Kerry Wood went seven and two thirds’ innings, but struggled, allowing six runs, three of them, of course, on one swing of the bat. He scattered seven hits and did manage to strike out nine.
