The Phenoms came up short in a wild slugfest with the 1956 New York Yankees and Mickey Mantle was largely, the reason why. The big switch hitter clubbed a pair of homers, the second, a three-run clout off Mark Eichhorn, in the bottom of the eleventh inning, to win a 12-10 decision for New York. The Mick had seven runs batted in, courtesy of the two home runs, a double and two singles.

Neither starter, Jose Fernandez nor Whitey Ford, were effective. Fernandez went just four plus innings, allowing four runs on eight hits; while Ford pitched six plus, giving up five runs on eight hits.

The Phenoms trailed, 6-3, heading into the seventh, when Andre Dawson hit a bases loaded triple to tie the game. New York answered immediately, when Mantle crushed a three-run blast into the seats, to put his team up, 9-6. Unbelievably, the Phenoms would again respond in the top of the eighth. Yankee reliever, Bob Grim walked Cal Ripken, then gave up a single to Bob Meusel. After Grim retired the next two batters, Joe Jackson stroked a two-run triple. Jackson himself scored later, on a Grim wild pitch, to re tie the game at 9 all.

The game remained knotted and moved into extra innings. The Phenoms took a 10-9 lead in the top of the eleventh, when Troy Tulowitzki led off with a double. Jackson sacrificed him to third, then Dawson singled him in.

That lead would prove to be short lived. Mark Eichhorn, the fifth Phenom’s pitcher of the day, retired Andy Carey for the first out, but then allowed singles to McDougald and Enos Slaughter, before Mantle ended it with his second three run home run.

Joe Jackson, Dustin Pedroia and Andre Dawson all had three-hit games, in a losing effort.
