Turk Lown walked in the winning run in the top of the tenth inning, as the Phenoms won a 1-0, pitcher’s duel against Bob Rush and the ’56 Chicago Cubs. Fernandez went 9 and a third innings, more than four innings past his point of weakness, with Sutter finishing up. For Chicago, Rush pitched nine innings plus but allowed Troy Tulowitzki to reach on a leadoff single in the top of the tenth. After he walked Dustin Pedroia, lefty Jim Davis took over to face Joe Jackson, who popped out. Davis gave way to Turk Lown, who walked Willie Mays and Frank Robinson back-to -back, pushing Tulowitzki across, with the go ahead run.
Fernandez came out for the bottom of tenth to try and get a shutout by himself. He retired King, but allowed singles to Irvin and Whisenant, before Sutter came in and fanned the final two batters.
