1956 PHASE RECAP
This was the first phase of the tour, in which the Phenoms finished with a losing record. They logged a 7-9 record in the 1956 phase. It was certainly a roller coaster ride. The team started off with their worst losing streak of the tour, dropping the first five games. They completely reversed that trend, winning their next five. With their record at 5-5, they lost to the Braves and the White Sox but rebounded and defeated the Cubs and Reds. They would finish by losing the final two games, first to the Cardinals, then to the Athletics.
There weren’t any three game pitching winners in this phase. However, Vean Gregg lost three games. The most runs scored and the most allowed, oddly, happened in the same game. That was a 12-10 loss to the 1956 N.Y. Yankees. The Phenoms had two shutouts. Hideo Nomo blanked the Washington Senators, 4-0 and Jose Fernandez whitewashed the 1956 Chicago Cubs, 1-0. The Phenoms themselves were shutout by Murray Dickson, of the St. Louis Cardinals.
