When the ball wasn’t bouncing off the outfield walls, it was leaving the ballpark entirely, as the 1960 Cincinnati Reds defeated the Phenoms, 13-12. Roy McMillan and Vada Pinson both doubled in the bottom of the ninth off Joe Page, who took the loss. Joe Nuxhall earned the win in relief.
The game set a new high for combined runs at 25. In today’s contest, a total of six home runs were hit. The Reds Jerry Lynch had a pair, and the Phenoms Eddie Murray had a grand slam in the top of the fourth.
The middle innings was where most of the damage was done. Each team scored twice in the first inning and that 2-2 tie held up until the top of the fourth, when the Phenoms plated six runs, highlighted by Eddie Murray’s grand slam. They scored twice more in the fifth, for a total of ten runs over the first five innings. However, the Reds wouldn’t go away. They tallied two in the fourth, three in the fifth and five in the sixth inning, to take a 12-10 lead. Carlton Fisk hit a two-run clout to tie the game in the top of the eighth. Vada Pinson hit a game winning double in the bottom of the ninth.
