NEW YORK YANKEES 1
WP-HUGH CASEY (1-0) LP-JOHNNY MURPHY (0-1)
HR- DODGERS: DUCKY MEDWICK (1); YANKEES: TOMMY HEINRICH (1)
Brooklyn takes the opener, 2-1. The game started out as a pitcher’s duel, with starters’ Curt Davis and Red Ruffing, traded zeroes over the first five innings. Davis worked out of a one out, bases loaded jam in the bottom of the third. He fanned Red Rolfe and Tommy Heinrich back-to-back, to get out of trouble.
The Yankees got on the board first, when Heinrich clubbed a solo home run off Davis in the last of the sixth. The Dodgers answered right back, thanks to a Ducky Medwick blast, in the top of the seventh. In the top of the eighth, with the score knotted at two all, Jimmy Wasdell pinch hit for Davis and drew a walk. Dixie Walker then singled and an error by Phil Rizzuto on the throw in from the outfield, put runners on the corners. Babe Herman singled in the go ahead run. Pete Reiser struck out. Dolph Camilli walked, but Medwick grounded out to end the inning.
Hugh Casey came on to work the final two inning for Brooklyn and made the 2-1 margin hold up.
Game two will feature Whit Wyatt against Spud Chandler.
