1941 WORLD SERIES. GAME FIVE. EBBETS FIELD, BROOKLYN N.Y.
NEW YORK 5
BROOKLYN 3
WP- MARV BREUER (1-0) LP-HUGH CASEY (1-1)
HR-BROOKLYN: LEW RIGGS (1)
Facing elimination and trailing by one run heading into the top of the ninth, the New York Yankees scored three runs, to dramatically win a 5-3 decision in the fifth game of the 1941 World Series, keeping their chances alive.
Each team got off to a hot start, scoring two runs in the first inning. The Yankees on a two-run double from Charlie Keller and the Dodgers on a two-run home run by Lew Riggs. Brooklyn added an unearned run in the fourth, courtesy of an error by Joe Gordon. The 3-2 score would hold up until the ninth.
Brooklyn had used Whit Wyatt (6.1 IP), Larry French (.2) and Curt Davis (1), to get to that point. That’s when they decided to go to Hugh Casey, who had already won two games in relief for his team. This time, however, Casey didn’t have it and to make matters worse, he was the last pitcher available in Brooklyn’s exhausted bullpen. Casey gave up a leadoff single to pinch hitter, Frenchy Bordagaray, then singles by Johnny Sturm, Red Rolfe and Tommy Henrich followed. The exclamation point was Casey hitting Joe DiMaggio with a pitch, to let the third run of the inning, cross the plate. Winning pitcher, Marv Breuer then set the Dodgers down, 1,2,3, in the bottom of the ninth.
The series shifts back to New York for game six, with Fred Fitzsimmons scheduled to pitch against Spud Chandler.
