McLain won for the first time in four starts. He gave up a three-run blast to Reggie Jackson in the very first inning, but the Tigers broke through for five runs in the third, largely thanks to home runs from Bill Freehan and Don Wert. Tommy Matchick’s two run clout in the fifth would prove to be the game winner in the 8-6 victory. In real life, this was the game in which Denny claimed his thirtieth victory.
