In the top of the second inning, a home run, double and triple, by Orlando Cepeda, Mike Shannon and Tim McCarver, respectively, put Philadelphia in a 3-0 hole. The Cardinals would later add two more runs, winning easily, five to one. Bob Gibson had a shutout going through six innings, until Bill White hit a solo blast in the last of the seventh. He hoped to get the complete game but gave up a walk and two singles in the ninth, hitting his point of weakness, so Joe Hoerner had to come in and get the final out of the game.
