Bob Gibson 1968 St. Louis Cardinals

June 6, 1968. vs. Houston Astros at The Astrodome

St. Louis 4 Houston 0

WP- Bob Gibson (8-3) LP- Don Wilson

Real Life: 9IP, 0R, 3H, 5K, 2BB. W-(4-5)

Replay: 9IP, 0R, 7H, 12K, 1BB. W-(8-3)

This was one of those rare Strat games, in which the replay was quite similar to the real-life result. Gibson threw shutouts in both games, however there were some important differences. The Cardinals’ ace matched his season high in strikeouts in the replay, with 12 punchouts. However, he really had to grind in the replay game. Gibson had just three clean innings in the 4-0 shutout win. His win was greatly helped by the fact that the Astros put up a Noble Tiger (No outs, bases loaded, ending with team incapable of scoring easy run). That occurred in the bottom of the fourth. Bob Aspromonte drew a walk off Gibson. Julio Gotay hit an infield single, and John Bateman followed with a single to load the bases. Gibson then fanned Don Wilson and Dick Simpson back-to-back, before getting Denis Menke to ground out. Gibby improves to 8-3, with his third shutout win.
