The Cardinals defeated the San Francisco Giants, 1-0, with Bob Gibson recording his twentieth win on a one hit shutout. Gibson lost in real life on this date, so now he has the same number of wins as put up in real life and has one less loss in the replay. This was a great pitcher’s duel between Gibby and Bobby Bolin of the Giants, who gave up just one run on four hits, in eight innings of work. San Francisco’s only hit against Gibson came with one out in the first inning. Ron Hunt singled, but Ty Cline hit into an inning ending double play. Gibson then set down the next 24 batters. St. Louis’ lone run came in the bottom of the first, when Lou Brock singled, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch, then scored on a Curt Flood ground out.
