Steve Carlton pitched his first complete game of the year, defeating the St. Louis Cardinals, 4-2. The Phillies took advantage of a very rough first inning by Bob Gibson, who gave up four runs in the initial frame. Larry Bowa led off the Phils attack with a triple, and the team followed that with four straight singles. Gibson would settle down and pitch six more scoreless innings, before being relieved, but the damage was done.
