The Phillies were able to hold on for a 2-1 win over the Montreal Expos. The ninth inning was drama filled for both teams. The Expos trailed, 1-0, heading into the final inning. Mike Marshall, the Expos closer came in to try and keep it close. Things did not go well. He issued back-to-back walks to Joe Lis and Don Money. John Bateman singled in a run, but Carlton hit into a double play. Denny Doyle struck out to end the inning. Carlton headed to the bottom of the ninth to try and complete the shutout. He allowed a leadoff single to Clyde Mashore but then fanned Ron Woods and Bob Bailey back-to-back. Ken Singleton lived up to his name, with a single. Coco Laboy pinch hit for John Boccabella, who had gone hitless in the game. That loaded the based and ended Carlton’s day. Mac Scarce took over on the mound. He walked Clyde Humphries to force in the Expos first run. Hector Torrez pinch hit for Marshall but grounded out to end the ball game.
