The Giants drew first blood on a Dave Kingman home run in the top of the second inning. Greg Luzinski gave Philadelphia the lead, with a two-run clout, in the bottom of the fourth. Kingman put San Francisco back on top with his second home run, a two-run shot in the top of the seventh. Randy Moffitt came in to relieve Giants starter, Don Carrithers in the bottom of the seventh. He did not retire a single batter. He allowed a double to Luzinski, walked Joe Lis then gave up a rbi single to Denny Doyle. The Giants went with Jerry Johnson on the mound. He was able to retire John Bateman for the first out, but then pinch hitter, Oscar Gamble stroked a two-run single, to give the Phillies a 5-3 lead. Gary Mathews stroked a solo, pinch-hit homer in the ninth, to pull the Giants within one, but that would be as close as they would get. A solid outing and a win for Carlton, who allowed three runs on three hits, in seven innings. The Gopher ball continues to be an issue, as he now has allowed 12 home runs.
