This is one of those games which sticks with you for a long time. Steve Carlton was leading, 6 to 1, just two outs away from victory, when the wheels completely fell off. The Dodgers scored eight runs in the bottom of the ninth, to steal away a 9-6 win over the Philadelphia Phillies.

After Carlton fanned Willie Davis to start the bottom of the ninth, he gave up a triple to Manny Mota, walked Frank Robinson, then gave up a rbi single to Wes Parker. That would end Carlton’s day and Bill Wilson came in to relieve. He wouldn’t retire a batter. Bobby Valentine doubled, Steve Garvey singled and Dick Dietz walked. The Philles tried their luck with Chris Short. Bill Russell pinch hit and doubled in a pair of runs, then Lee Lacy hit a game winning home run. Truly a shocking finish, but at least Carlton escaped with a no decision.
