Steve Carlton couldn’t overcome a bad start and ended up losing a 4-2 decision to the Chicago Cubs. Lefty gave up three doubles and three walks in the first inning, putting the Phillies in a 3-0 hole. The very next inning, Don Kessinger tripled and then scored on a Greg Luzinski error. Philadelphia got on the board via a Denny Doyle sacrifice fly in the third. Cubs starter, Milt Pappas held the Phillies scoreless over the next five innings. He lost his chance for a shutout when he allowed two walks and a single in the bottom of the ninth. Carlton has now been surpassed in wins as far as real life vs. replay. He still is up one in the loss column in the replay, however.
