Despite struggling in just about every inning, Steve Carlton still had a chance to come away with a win, as he left after seven innings, with a 2-1 lead. That would not hold up, however. Reliever, Bucky Brandon got the first two outs in the bottom of the eighth but then walked Jerry Grote. Wayne Garrett doubled, putting runners on second and third. Ed Kranepool pinch hit for Mets pitcher, Buzz Capra and singled in two runs, to put New York ahead, 3-2. Tug McGraw then struck out the side in order, to notch the save. Carlton is for sure, in a bit of a slump. After winning six starts in a row, he has lost four out of five and of course, had a no decision today.
