The Phillies jumped on Steve Blass for two runs in the top of the first. Pittsburgh answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the first. Philadelphia added what would prove to be a necessary insurance run in the seventh, when Tom Hutton hit a solo home run off Blass. Pittsburgh scratched out a second run in the bottom of the eighth, however, Carlton was able to hold on for his ninth complete game win.
